The dental hygienist at One Harley Street London

The Dental Hygienist is a very important member of our dental team. She is a specially trained professional whose primary role is in the prevention of dental disease. Her work involves the prevention of Periodontal (gum) disease and the prevention of dental cavities in both children and adults. In addition, she also treats active gum disease with a view to rendering the disease process inactive. One of her major roles is the maintenance of healthy gums in individuals who have previously suffered from gum disease. She also places fissure sealants as a preventative measure in children’s newly erupted teeth.

Patients often see the Dental Hygienist for a, ‘Scale & Polish.’ Most people see this as a process where the teeth are cleaned and polished to remove staining caused by diet or tobacco. This is true but there is a lot more to it than that.

She carefully charts the teeth and gums noting in particular: gum pockets, inflammation, bleeding, swelling, and the presence of plaque and calculus. Plaque is an organic mixture of bacteria, saliva and organic debris. Calculus (sometimes known as tartar) is plaque that has hardened into a chalk-like substance. Both plaque and calculus are extremely harmful to the gums and underlying bone tissues. They are found above and below the gum line. Your dental hygienist is very skilled in removing this harmful substance and does so very gently with the minimum of discomfort.

The Dental Hygienist is also skilled in removing surface stains using the latest polishing pastes and power sprays.

One must not overlook the work of the Dental Hygienist in developing an oral hygiene programme specific for every patient. This involves re-educating patients with regards to the use of toothbrushes, electronic aids, dental floss, inter-dental brushes, floss… to name a few. She is also able to suggest specific home cleaning programmes, which ensure that the build-up of harmful levels of plaque is prevented.

Our Dental Hygienist is skilled in the placement of sealants in children. She is able to provide local anaesthesia (in adults) when necessary and place temporary dressings in cavities.
